SteamVoyage at Maker Faire Rome

Maker Faire Rome will be held from October 17 to 19, 2025, an event dedicated to makers, innovators, and creatives who will present projects in artificial intelligence, robotics, and much more. SteamVoyage is among the artistic exhibitors with a brand-new collection and a question: how much has the role of the artisan changed with the introduction of technology in ancient arts like leatherworking?
For the occasion, our stand will be very different from usual: we'll have our laser on hand to demonstrate how we engrave leather to create our board game and role-playing accessories, clothing items, and home decor. Specifically, we'll be showcasing a collection of leather accessories engraved with the zodiac signs and their connection to Greek mythology.
Journal covers, keychains, and bookmarks will be engraved with signature images, one for each zodiac sign, depicting a Greek myth. Most will be hand-painted, but we'll also have leather bookmarks that can be personalized on the spot with a name or word engraved.
Our board game and role-playing accessories will also be available: you will find leather dice bags inspired by Dungeons & Dragons classes, hand-painted dice trays, and our leather-covered wooden dice box, also hand-painted.
We'll soon be finalizing the collection and previewing it on our website. The items can be painted with your favorite colors; just ask us in the commissions section of the website!
Our hope is to meet many people who, like us, want to reflect on how artisans today are faced with entirely new tools and techniques thanks to the advent of technology. Without lasers, for example, each leather engraving would take four times as long as it does now, impacting production costs and times.
Yet many consider tools like the laser to be a contamination of ancient art, although only the use of technology, in our opinion, saves artisans from becoming anachronistic figures in a world where production must be economically sustainable and respect certain rhythms.
That's why we'll also be bringing along hand-engraved leather accessories, as per tradition: we'll be showing the difference between two very similar dice trays, one of which is hand-engraved, the other laser-engraved.
Anyone interested in exploring the new frontiers of leatherworking with us is invited to the Gazometro Ostiense, where they will also find hundreds of innovative projects from around the world in key fields of innovation. We look forward to seeing you with our laser and dozens of hand-painted leather items dedicated to the zodiac signs and the Greek myths that surround them.
